the morning had stretched out along the horizon
cradling the earth the way a fire will work its way
along the bend of a creek. the honest shafts of
spingtime had positioned their opening heads
eastward. traffic crawled more slowly than usual.
the whole scene seemed to be waiting for something
important; even the trees held their limbs very still.
nothing happened. nothing kept on happening.
it went on like that for days, people went about their
business with the sun almost risen, the blooms
almost open, whole forests silent and motionless.
i remember wondering whether it was me, something
i had done or hadn’t. i remember others saying
the same thing, all of us stuck fast between dawn and day.
