what it was

like a charged solar panel
like a fresh pot of coffee
like popcorn on the stove
like when neighbors call
with flowers and a card
saying they’re just so sorry and
staying as long as you need them
or when the wind is warm
and every hair feels it
finally coming home
after that awful season alone
seeing the geese flying north at last
open windows in grandmother’s house
new calves with awkward eyes and legs
an extra half hour of sunlight
please imagine my surprise
to find not only that these very best things
all die all dissolve in the time it takes
a dark cloud to rise up from the south
and baptize the fields in weeks of rain
but that they also cycle round again
they even seem to turn out better
for having gone away awhile
i wasn’t expecting that
