ready made two

it happened again.
who knew it could?
what was most wanted
followed directly
by what was wanted least.
it does something to a man,
sure,
but if it keeps happening
it does something else.
more than the loss
or the disappointment,
it’s the sense that it will keep
happening, happening over.

victims want familiarity.

inevitability, namelessness,
clinical distance.
knowing oneself means dealing
in always and never,
means opting out of any particular
moment with an individual person
in a memorable scene
during which all one
is thinking about
is whether or not
the other person
knows how happy one is
knows how unique other is
knows how one
and other
go together.
